What is Occupational Therapy?

Bridging treatment and real life through practical, functional support.

How Occupational Therapy Works

Occupational therapy looks at the interaction between the person (health, cognition, emotions, energy, nervous system), their activities (work, caregiving, self-care, routines, roles), and their environment (home, workplace, community, expectations, systems, and supports).

We integrate mind–body approaches, including mindfulness and nervous system regulation, to support emotional regulation, stress recovery, and sustainable participation in daily life. By understanding how these pieces fit together, we identify what's getting in the way of function – and where change is possible.

Our Approach at Kawa Health

At Kawa Health, we provide occupational therapy services that focus on real-life function—at home, at work, and beyond.

Our assessments and interventions consider physical and mental health, cognitive and emotional demands, daily routines and roles, the environments in which people live and work, and nervous system and stress responses.

This allows us to understand not only what is happening, but why challenges are showing up and how meaningful, sustainable change can be created. Every person, environment, and role is unique – our services are individualized and designed to meet people where they are.

We understand that health and well-being affect the whole of a person's life—not just their job.

We explore the connection between physical and mental health, stress and nervous system responses, work demands, daily routines, and home and social environments. This helps us create support plans that are practical, realistic, and sustainable across all areas of life.

HOLISTIC

We centre on function and everyday performance, not just symptoms or medical management.

We work collaboratively to develop practical solutions that support the management of health challenges, building routines and skills, adapting tasks and environments, using mindfulness and mind–body tools, and improving participation in work and life.

Our focus is on real-world tools and strategies—not just education or advice.

PRACTICAL & CREATIVE

Past and ongoing experiences of stress or trauma can influence how people function in their roles, relationships, and work.

Our services are trauma-informed and include nervous system regulation and mindfulness-based strategies to support safety, emotional regulation, and recovery. We prioritize safety and trust, choice and collaboration, respect for lived experience, and strengths-based support.

Our goal is to help you feel supported as you work toward meaningful and sustainable change.

TRAUMA-INFORMED

Who We Support

We support individuals, employees and employers, teams and organizations across prevention and early support, active challenges, recovery and return-to-work, and life and role transitions.

Occupational therapy is appropriate across the lifespan and across levels of care.
